President's Message

Mark Twain once said "Always acknowledge a fault. This will throw those in authority off their guard and give you an opportunity to commit more." Well, I have a fault I wish to acknowledge. In my letters over the past months I have tried to inveigle, convince and persuade you, the member, of the importance of active participation in the chapter through attendance at the mini-seminars, dinner meetings and involvement on the various committees. In my campaign I have reminded you of the importance of your involvement in the profession and the rewards reaped through such participation. What I have failed to do is provide a clear articulation of the TSCPA Knoxville Chapter vision.

I see the vision of the TSCPA Knoxville Chapter as providing quality continuing education to a diverse group of accounting professionals - public practice, industry, government, business, nonprofits and academia; providing opportunities for both the old guard and young professional to enhance the profession and its image; providing opportunities to enhance or develop future leaders within the profession through board, committee and community involvement and active participation; and providing - at least once a month - a convivial environment for mentoring, fellowship, networking and friendship. This vision is undertaken as an extension to and in mutual support of our state society; but, more importantly, each and every member is essential to and needed to make the vision come to fruition. So attend! Volunteer! Teach! Mentor!

Quoting Bear Bryant, "If anything goes bad, I did it. If anything goes semi-good, we did it, if anything goes really good, then you did it." I hope you can see the theme I'm trying to weave throughout this letter. So, let us turn our attention to things that are really going well because of you.

Didn't Sean Brewer, Daniel Messing, Andy Harper, Ted Hotz and Ashley Ogle from Pugh & Company do a fantastic job with the August mini-seminars? Pugh & Company has committed to produce another tax and A&A program on July 12, 2011.

Another stimulating future commitment by Crowe Horwath: Eric Elliot and Adam Haberman (coming out of Chicago) will conduct the "Due Diligence in M&A" and "Accounting for a Business Combination" seminars on Aug. 9, 2011. Thanks, Rachel Zizka for putting this together.

Brenda Boyd has worked her contacts at the National Association of Credit Management of East Tennessee, scheduling a stimulating course that will address credit and risk management on June 14, 2011.

Jamie Hill has shepherded the Service to Small Business Committee with enthusiasm and zeal. Through her leadership and energy, she has helped connect the chapter deeper into the business community. Stay tuned for exciting news of future opportunities from and through this committee.

The chapter is co-sponsoring a professional mixer with the Knoxville Bar Association on Sept. 28 at Club LeConte. Thanks should be given to Stacy Roettger, past mini-seminar instructor, for this networking opportunity. If you haven't registered, please register online by Sept. 24.

Least we not forget, the Oct. 4 chapter golf tournament still needs your sponsorship, contributions and participation. The children of The Angel Tree need your blessings, generosity and support. Please contact Curtis Minhinnett for information and forms, or see the information above.

This bounty of goodness that flows forth from the chapter is because of you and your choice to move beyond self-interest. Which reminds me of an utterance by John Adams, our second constitutional president, "If we do not lay out ourselves in the service of mankind, whom should we serve?"

The University of Tennessee
Richard L. Townsend Accounting Excellence Endowment

The TSCPA Knoxville Chapter recently announced its support of the University of Tennessee's Richard L. Townsend Accounting Excellence Endowment, established to recognize the service and leadership of Dr. Townsend. The Knoxville Chapter is encouraging individuals and firms to support the endowment because of the outstanding contribution Dr. Townsend has provided to the CPA profession and to TSCPA over the span of his career. Many of you know that, as a beloved faculty member, Dr. Townsend has taught thousands of students and professionals and has served as a true proponent of the accounting profession. The board voted to offer a dollar-for-dollar match for all contributions made by chapter members up to $25,000 until March 31, 2011.

Earnings from the Richard L. Townsend Excellence Endowment will be used to support The University of Tennessee Master of Accountancy Program in its areas of greatest need. These needs typically include various areas of student and faculty support including technology (such as databases and software), educational travel expenses, etc.
