8:05 - 9:45 a.m. 1. Accounting Standards Update
Paula B. Thomas
, DBA, CPA, Professor of Accounting, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tenn.
CPAs face a drastically changing accounting standard-setting arena. Despite the FASB’s efforts to simplify GAAP research through the Codification Project, accounting standards continue to grow in complexity. The Private Company Financial Reporting Committee is actively working to consider the needs of private companies and their constituents. Though it is clear that U.S. enterprises will have to address international accounting standards, both the timing and many implementation issues remain uncertain. In this session, participants will hear an update on all of these issues, as well as recent accounting standards issued by the FASB and significant topics on the standard-setting agenda. Find out how the FASB and IASB actions may impact your clients or employer.
9:45 - 10 a.m. Networking Break & Exhibit Viewing

Robert E. Palmer V
, CPA, President, Data Guidance Group, Inc., Memphis, TN
You've done a good job of looking at internal control. You've identified all the possible holes and tested for them. You've brainstormed about vulnerabilities. But did you know that client employees were changing vendor names and addresses directly? Did you know that they could change information on posted invoices (and not just in QuickBooks!)? A 25 year veteran CPA and IT consultant shows you some of the things you may not have thought about. The IT industry is actually creating problems for you that you may not know exist. Giving clients more tools for accessing their data is a good thing in IT. It may not be a good thing for you. How can you protect yourself? What audit tests can you do? What should you insist the client IT personnel document? Attend this session and find out!

14. Compilation & Review - Areas of Concern
James R. Crockett

Compilation and review engagements pose potential legal and peer review problems. Participants will learn how to deal with 8 specific potential problems: (1) wording the report (2) reporting when not independent (3) disclosure requirements (4) financial statement format requirements (5) misclassifications on financial statements (6) significant omissions on financial statements (7) Inadequate documentation and (8) client representation letters. Participants should gain a better appreciation of potential problems in compilation and review engagements and an understanding of how to mitigate those problems.
