2. The Brave New World of Investing - How Are Your Peers Managing Their Investment Portfolios?
Monica Sonnier, CPA, CFA, Sr. VP, Portfolio Strategist, FTN Financial, Memphis, Tenn.
After all of the spectacular blowups, shake-ups and meltdowns of the past year, is there any real value left to be had in the markets? Many institutions face a different outlook after the sub-prime meltdown and resulting economic slowdown. And of course, the pace of regulatory, tax and accounting changes that financial institutions have faced over the past year has been unprecedented. We’ll examine ways that other institutions are adjusting their portfolios to address issues such as reduced loan growth, increased credit losses, looming deposit insurance increases, increased deposit growth and too low/too high capital.
3. Current Developments in the Taxation of Financial Institutions
Michael J. Giammalvo, CPA, Partner, Crowe Horwath LLP, Brentwood, Tenn.
The past few years have seen significant changes in federal and state bank tax laws and the GAAP accounting for income taxes. We will also discuss the recent Tennessee legislative session and related bills that will impact the banking industry. We will explore these important developments, as well as other topics of interest to the audience, in this informative session.
