Goodbye Rabbit Ears, Hello HDTV - Technology and Risk Management Update: 2009
|
William Rickman Murray, MBA, CPA, CISA, CITP, AAP, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, Commerce Union Bank, Springfield, Tenn.

Despite tough economic times, businesses are continuing to deploy a wide array of information technology solutions to streamline their operations and to improve their bottom lines. While most of us appreciate the power and convenience of these new systems, we do not always fully understand the underlying technologies and related risk management issues.
The purpose of this presentation is to provide CPAs with the knowledge framework needed to identify, address and manage emerging information technologies and risk. As accountants working with public and private companies, you are on the frontline of addressing the issues surrounding the security of your clients’ information assets. Topics covered will include:
- What are some of the emerging technologies in 2009 and how are they changing my business?
- What is "digital convergence" and why should I care?
- What is "cloud computing" and what can it do for or to my business?
- What are social networking sites such as Facebook all about and what kind of impact are they having upon businesses?
- How can I implement effective procedures that will protect my business from the growing risks posed through interconnected systems (e.g. payment platforms)?

"One of our most trusted employees stole from our company for years. How could this happen to us?” Regrettably, this sentiment has been spoken by far too many business owners, and the problems seem to increase in times of economic downturns. The impact of employee theft schemes is damaging to all companies but the effect will disproportionately impact smaller businesses. This session will examine recent trends in internal and external fraud schemes, but will also encourage owners, managers and accountants to "Think Like Thieves" to identify areas of vulnerability and better protect themselves from crooked employees. In addition, several suggestions to identify and stop fraud schemes at early stages will be discussed.
