June 1 is New Deadline for IRS Uncertain Tax Positions Proposal

The IRS extended the comment period for the controversial uncertain tax positions reporting proposal to June 1. This gives practitioners and taxpayers more time to provide comprehensive feedback on this controversial proposal, the forthcoming implementation schedule and instructions.

Since its release in January, the IRS received numerous questions and comments on the proposal, including:

  • Requirements for the new schedule with returns relating to 2009 tax years
  • Expected release of draft schedule and instructions
  • Clarification regarding application to pass-through entities and tax-exempt entities
  • Potential duplication of reporting with disclosures made on other forms
  • Requests for extended comment period

As proposed, the IRS would require the reporting of uncertain tax positions at the time a return is filed by business taxpayers that have over $10 million in assets, and that have a financial statement prepared under FIN 48 or similar accounting standard.

Feedback can be shared by e-mailing Announcement.Comments@irscounsel.treas.gov with a subject line that reads “Announcement 2010-9.”

Management and Leadership in a CPA Firm - Part 4 by Bill Reeb

In this issue’s commentary, Bill Reeb concludes his four-part series. The first three columns covered various styles of leadership/managers, common excuses for not training others and why failure and “having your people’s backs” are such important ingredients in the development process. With that foundation in mind, this article takes a look at what you should be doing now in order to become a more effective people manager and developer.

Salary Compression: Will It Be Your Next Pay Challenge?

Salary compression refers to when there is an unusually small pay differential among positions with various skills and responsibility levels, or where people at lower-level jobs are paid as much or more than those in higher-level jobs. Changes in staff at CPA firms and the continued trend toward mergers means that salary compression is going to be a challenge CPA firm leaders will be dealing with more frequently.
