Officers' Message : "Diversifying the Profession:

Rowan Leathers, Immediate Past President

Attracting the best and brightest to the accounting profession is at or near the top of those goals for seemingly all professional associations of CPAs. This was discussed extensively at the most recent meeting of the TSCPA Board, specifically within the context of its scholarship program. How to accomplish this task is an altogether different proposition.

One facet of this process is finding an effective way to diversify the profession from an ethnic perspective. It certainly appears that gender diversification is occurring, and occurring at a rapid pace. However, a “look around” the profession reflects the almost total lack of ethnic diversity. How to accomplish this is a daunting task.

My law firm (even though I am a CPA, I practice law), Miller & Martin, PLLC has in place a strategic plan which has as part of its focus very specific ethnic and gender diversification objectives. It is taken so seriously that every lawyer is required to participate in “inclusiveness” training on an annual basis. It is about more than just the numbers. It is about finding ways to make ethnic diversity, among other types of diversity, “comfortable” for all involved.

As we look at ethnic diversification within the accounting profession, we all need to take a hard look at how to make the profession more inviting for those ethnic minority groups who have minimal participation in the accounting profession.

Online Dues Payment Now Available

Once again, TSCPA is offering a fast and easy way for you to renew your membership: online dues payments.

Paying your dues through the TSCPA Web site is a convenient, secure way to continue your society membership. While online, you will receive immediate confirmation of your dues payment and have the opportunity to print a copy for your files. Firm administrators will have the opportunity to pay dues for multiple members within their firm online as well.

To access your account online, you will need your member ID number. This number can be found on the mailing label of your copy of the Tennessee CPA Journal (all member IDs are made up of numerals only and not the letter in front).

TSCPA dues are due on April 30 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010. However, dues for this period are not considered delinquent until May 31. In an attempt to save postage and mailing expense, TSCPA provides the online payment option to members through the month of April. A paper invoice will be mailed to members who have not remitted dues by April 30.
