Tennessee State Tax Information

March 26, 2020 This section will be continuously updated with the latest information regarding changes to the state tax deadlines and extensions.

  • Filing Extension for Business Tax
    The Tennessee Department of Revenue issued notice #20-07 extending the due date for filing and paying the Business Tax from April 15, 2020 to June 15, 2020. The Business Tax is a tax on gross receipts that applies to most businesses selling goods or services. Taxpayers will have until June 15, 2020 to file returns and make any payments originally due on April 15, 2020. Interest and late filing penalties will not be applied to returns filed and payments made on or before this extended due date.
  • Tax Filing and Payment Extension for Hall Income Tax
    The Department of Revenue has extended the due date for filing and paying the Hall income tax from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. For more information, read important notice #20-06 .

  • Tennessee State Franchise and Excise Tax
    Governor Lee announced that Tennessee will be extending the due date for state franchise and excise taxes from April 15 to July 15, 2020. Taxpayers will have until July 15 to file returns and make any payments (including quarterly estimated payments) originally due on April 15, 2020. The department will be publishing guidance related to this decision soon, and we will continue to update on further actions and decisions as they occur.
  • Update on Franchise and Excise Tax Payments
    If you have already scheduled F&E tax payments through your tax software for processing on April 15th, we have confirmed with the TN Department of Revenue that they can only cancel the payment.  If you want to change the payment date or reschedule it to the July 15th due date, you must do that through your tax software.

  • AICPA State Tax Filing Relief Guidance for all states (open to the public)

Federal Tax Relief & Extensions

IRS Guidance

  • Notice 2020-29 (PDF) provides greater flexibility for taxpayers by extending claims periods to apply unused amounts remaining in a health FSA or dependent care assistance programs, expanding the ability to make mid-year elections for health coverage, and applying earlier relief for high deductible health plans to cover expenses related to COVID-19.

  • Notice 2020-33 (PDF) provides guidance to increase the amount of funds that can carry over without penalty at the end of the year for flexible spending arrangements.

     

  • Notice 2020-32 (PDF), Taxpayers that receive a loan through the PPP can’t deduct expenses that are normally deductible if those expenses were reimbursed by a PPP loan that was subsequently forgiven.

Update on Live Learning Events & Meetings

March 10, 2020 Out of an abundance of caution, all upcoming committee and chapter meetings scheduled have been canceled. Online programs will still occur as scheduled.

Our team is working with Society leaders and facilities to review all possibilities for upcoming CPE seminars and conferences. In order to accommodate members, we are discussing alternatives for those who do not wish to attend in-person programs.
