Customize your 93rd Annual Meeting and Convention experience with the Day Pass option, a single-day registration offering 4-5 hours of CPE from top instructors. Day 1 will cover handling uncomfortable situations, a state agency update and organizational development. Day 2 includes a session on AI, the future workforce and a pipeline initiatives update. An economic update and state-specific ethics will be presented on Day 3.

Mike will define collaboration engaging the audience in a high energy interactive session on this topic. Brain science will be applied to enlighten participants on the steps necessary in order to explore and enhance opportunities for better client outcomes. Identifying bias,  you will be educated on how to recognize and overcome bias when in difficult situations. Mike will give participants one of the tools they need so that they can apply techniques immediately at work and in life and other helpful information. Mike will be using elements from three of his books in today's presentation, The Collaboration Effect, Peaceful Resolutions, and The Servant Manager.

Why are successful leaders increasingly turning away from conventional management wisdom and focusing instead on emotional intelligence? In this session, you'll discover the importance emotional intelligence contributes to successful leadership and learn how to utilize it to build stronger, more effective relationships. Explore the five core competencies that make up emotional intelligence as well as its associated cognitive process to help develop self-awareness of your emotional intelligence strengths, weaknesses and blind spots. We'll also discuss perceptions in the workplace and how they influence group dynamics and effective communication, as well as practice accurately evaluating others. By the end of this session, you'll have the tools to create an action plan to further develop your emotional intelligence.

This session is designed as a primer to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) and to discuss how it will impact accountants as they work. The material will briefly explain what AI is and then focus on ways that it is already serving those in the accounting realm. It will close with a look at future AI-centric developments that will have great potential to positively impact the accounting profession. Those wishing to gain an understanding of what artificial intelligence is and how it will be used by accountants should consider attending this session.

Speakers

Michael Gregory, MBA, ASA, CVA

Michael Gregory is a mediation and negotiations specialist. He has the knowledge, experience, and relationships to help you with IRS and other disputes. Prior to founding Michael Gregory Consulting, LLC, Mike had 28 years of experience with the IRS in a variety of capacities from specialist to executive level. During his last 11 years with the IRS, Mike was an IRS territory manager with responsibilities for up to twenty-three states with an emphasis in business valuation and specialist issues nationally.

Mike has been working with neuroscientists for over ten years and he has written 12 books focusing on IRS issues business valuation, conflict resolution, servant leadership, and his most recent book The Collaboration Effect. Mike has a BS from Valparaiso University, a MS from the University of Wisconsin -- Madison and an MBA from DePaul University.

Jeremy Wortman, PhD

Jeremy is the Owner of HRD Initiatives, which specializes in leadership development, organizational development and talent management solutions. In this capacity, he works with client partners' executive teams in determining talent management strategies, building leadership talent, implementing solutions and coaching individual leaders.

Jeremy started his career, and spend a significant amount of his time, at TD Ameritrade where he was the Director of Organizational Effectiveness. There, he was responsible for enterprise-wide talent management initiatives where he partnered with senior executives across the organization to determine business unit and department-level talent management strategies and solutions that drove their performance goals. He was also responsible for building their leadership development programs. He has extensive knowledge of organizational psychology and has had great success in developing strategies and programs that build better individuals and organizations using a strengths-based approach.

Jeremy has also focused his expertise within the accounting profession since 2004. He is a frequent speaker at various Regional, National and International conferences on the topics of Ethical Decision Making, Leadership Development and Talent Management. As a consultant to the profession his clients include a range of small firms to the top ten largest in the United States, many of whom are found on the Accounting Today’s Best Firms to Work for list.

Jeremy attended the University of Nebraska where he earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior, Leadership and Organizational Development as well as a Masters in Business Administration. He holds undergraduate degrees in Economics and Human Resources. Jeremy is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Academy of Management. He is also active in his local community as the former President of the Young Alumni Board for the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska, where he was also an adjunct professor from 1999 to 2016.

Kerry E. Roberts, CPA

Kerry E. Roberts, CPA is a frequent public speaker and presenter. In addition to presenting for Surgent, Kerry chairs the Tennessee Senate Committee for Government Operations, which oversees 260 governmental agencies in the state of Tennessee.

Prior to working with the Tennessee General Assembly, Kerry was a business owner and CEO for 25 years. His background includes being president and chairman of a national business association, partner in a CPA firm, audit staff for a "Big 8" accounting firm, and adjunct accounting faculty for Lipscomb University.

Kerry was elected to the Tennessee State Senate in 2014 representing Cheatham, Dickson, Hickman, Humphreys, a portion of Montgomery and Robertson counties.

Kerry is a 1983 graduate of Lipscomb University (accounting major). Married since 1987, Kerry and his wife are the parents of three kids and live in Springfield, Tennessee. His hobbies include cycling, a vintage motorcycle, two antique Triumph convertibles, and tending to a 155-year-old home.

Karl W. Egnatoff, CPA, CITP

Karl Egnatoff is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) currently living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He has worked as an information technology services provider, a trainer and a programmer related to financial and business technology projects since 1995. Prior to this, Karl worked in public accounting as well as in private sector accounting for a period of approximately six years. He has been teaching group live and web-based continuing education since 2006. In addition to being a CPA, he is also a Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP).

Karl is a member of the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Information Technology Section of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He has also achieved a number of technology certifications including Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Certified Software Engineer (CSE) and Certified Integration Developer (CID). During the course of his career, Mr. Egnatoff has owned and operated a number of successful businesses.

Karl graduated from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. During his time in college he participated in division I Cross County competing on the varsity squad. He was also on Marshall's Track team. Karl and his wife Lana live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and have been married since 1990. They have two grown sons, Jordan and Steven.

Simeon Wallis is the Chief Investment Officer with Aprio Wealth Management. Michelle S. Freeman, CPA

Dr. Freeman is an Assistant Professor and Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Accountancy with East Tennessee State University as well as a CPA. Her professional background is as a CPA, working as an intern with Ernst & Young and as an accountant with Burkhart & Company in Knoxville, Tennessee. She has over twenty years of experience teaching accounting courses. Dr. Freeman has presented on and authored several articles regarding auditing standards, taxation and accounting education.
