Time and again, we see large organizations fall victim to the same types of attacks. In this session, Cori Macy will share real world examples of how attackers gain access, from phone calls and emails that trick employees into giving up information to common technical weaknesses that are easy to exploit. You’ll learn why these attacks work, what red flags to watch for, and how to respond before small mistakes turn into major compromises.

Michael Haas is a Director in RSM's Technology Consulting practice, with over 15 years of experience delivering strategic value to organizations within the healthcare and nonprofit sectors. In 2022, he was selected to participate in the firm's prestigious Industry Eminence Program as a Senior Analyst focused on the healthcare industry. In this role, he collaborates closely with the firm's Chief Economist and other program members to analyze key trends and dynamics influencing middle market businesses.

Michael specializes in enhancing operational and financial performance for clients across the healthcare sector. With a comprehensive understanding of the industry's complexities and constraints, he delivers tailored solutions that address client challenges effectively. Joe Dolan, CPA, CHFP

Joe Dolan joined Covenant Health as executive vice president and chief financial officer in 2023. Dolan is responsible for overseeing the financial operations and strategic financial planning for the health system.

With more than 17 years of experience in healthcare and finance, he joins Covenant Health from Atrium Health (newly named Advocate Health) in Charlotte, N.C., where he served as senior vice president and enterprise controller of one of the nation's largest health systems. Under his leadership, he was essential to the integration, growth, and development of the corporate accounting and finance teams. He played an important part in the development of the enterprise shared service strategy and was responsible for leading several key strategic finance and technology transformations.

Prior to Atrium, Dolan held various finance leadership roles at Wake Forest Baptist and Duke University Health System. In previous roles, he has served as a board member for CHESS LLC Finance; Wake AirCare, LLC; Wake Forest Emergency Providers, and Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging. He began his career in public accounting with Grant Thornton LLP and is a licensed Certified Professional Accountant (CPA). He received a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He has received multiple recognitions from Becker's Hospital Review as a "Chief Financial Officer to Know."

Casey Willis

Casey is the CEO of Saint Mary's Regional Health System in Russellville, Arkansas. Her background is in Health Information Management and Market Physician Practice Management, all in rural/smaller hospital systems before getting into executive leadership several years ago. Casey's passion is for rural healthcare - protection of the delivery of healthcare in rural service areas so that small towns can continue to thrive and grow and the people in those communities will continue to be in a position to get the highest quality care possible.

Danny Schmidt is a senior manager in the assurance practice and a health care senior analyst for RSM US LLP. As a member of the Industry Eminence program, Danny works alongside the firm's chief economist and his fellow senior analysts to understand, forecast and communicate economic, business and technology trends affecting middle market businesses.

Adam Middleton

Adam Middleton has committed his entire professional career to healthcare. Adam works as a business consultant for hospitals, physician groups and healthcare related entities. Since 2008, Adam has consulted with physician practices, post-acute providers and hospitals with particular focus on physician compensation, fair market value, management, operations, finance and strategic planning. Among other projects, his key consultancy roles included the merger of two hospital managed service organizations, the start-up of physician practices, and the negotiation of numerous physician-hospital acquisitions. He also leads strategic planning for physician groups and hospital service lines.

He founded Healthcare Advisory Network in 2011 and joined The Viability Company as a Principal in 2012 to specialize in profitable growth strategies for hospitals, physicians and healthcare companies. HAN affiliates with subject matter experts and numerous organizations to assist clients find the best solutions for issues.

Prior to consulting, Adam was an executive at two major healthcare organizations in the greater Dayton area; Dayton Heart Hospital (physician owned jointly with MedCath) and Premier Health Partners.

As a lifelong Ohioan, Adam has been actively engaged in serving his community where he lives and raises his family. He has served on the boards of directors of The Far Hills Surgical Center, The Dialysis Centers of Dayton and as board chair of Life Essentials and South Community Behavioral Health.

Adam is currently a Board Member of the National Society of Certified Healthcare Business Consultants and holds the designation of a Certified Healthcare Business Consultant. Clay W. Runnels, MD, MBA, CPE, FACHE

Dr. Clay Runnels is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and nationally recognized healthcare executive with over two decades of clinical and administrative leadership experience. As Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive at Ballad Health, Dr. Runnels oversees system level quality, telehealth, hospital-based practices, research, academic programs, and a multi-specialty medical group of more than nine hundred providers across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

Known for his transformational leadership, Dr. Runnels has led major healthcare consolidations, pioneered telemedicine strategies, and generated multimillion-dollar operational savings through innovative contract negotiations and system-wide quality initiatives. His prior roles include Vice President, Service Line Development and CMO across multiple hospitals, where he championed LEAN methodologies, peer review reform, and infection control measures that significantly improved patient outcomes.

Dr. Runnels is a Certified Physician Executive and Fellow of both the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He holds an MBA from Milligan University and an MD from UT Southwestern Medical School, with residency training at Texas A&M/Scott & White Hospital.

Andrew Corrigan

Drew Corrigan is an Audit Partner who serves as the National Audit Industry Leader for Healthcare. Drew previously served as the Managing Partner for the KPMG Portland office and has more than 25 years of experience, primarily serving large not-for-profit health systems, academic medical centers, and payors.

Michael Piver

Mike's career in healthcare administration spans more than 25 years. He began as an ASC Administrator and then transitioned to strategic planning and development with a small development and management company in Alabama. The next years of his career would see the development of several new surgery centers and physician practices across Alabama, the development of a 20-bed rehabilitation hospital and the conversion of a skilled nursing facility. Piver was directly responsible for the overall strategic direction and operations for HonorHealth in Arizona, where he successfully developed one of the largest orthopedic co-management agreements in the country, including more than 90 independent orthopedic and spine surgeons and involving nearly 20 different medical groups.

Over the course of his career in healthcare management, Piver gained key experience as a strategic leader in orthopedics. Mike served patients in Mobile, Alabama as executive director of ambulatory services at Infirmary Health. In that role, Mike contributed to the growth of Gulf Orthopedics, tripling the number of orthopedic surgeons available to patients in just 18 months as well as overseeing the growth and expansion of three physician/health system ASC JV’s.

Currently, Mike is the vice president of orthopedic services for Ballad Health, a 20-hospital system, servicing 29 counties in the Appalachian Highlands region. He is also the co-chair of Ballad Health’s CMS TEAMS program for their five hospitals participating in the program. Mike is married and in his spare time loves playing golf, being outdoors and cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Philip J. Lay, CPA

Jason Lay is the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the McNabb Center located in Knoxville, Tennessee. The McNabb Center is the region's leading nonprofit provider of mental health, substance use, social, and victim services.

In the Center's 74-year history, Jason is the first person to hold the CFO position. He is a Licensed CPA in the State of Tennessee, and his career specializes in Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting. Jason is an active volunteer in both professional and community areas where he currently participates on the TSCPA Health Care Conference Planning Committee, the TSCPA Governmental & Not-For-Profit Conference Planning Committee and serves as the Treasurer of the Tennessee Association of Mental Health Organizations.

David W. McMillan, CPA

David leads PYA's national consulting practice. For over three decades, he has served clients across the country, leading strategic planning exercises, merger and acquisition projects, feasibility studies, compensation design, and fair market valuation services. David is often called upon to provide advisory services for healthcare executives and boards of directors and is a frequent meeting and retreat facilitator. Joseph A. Peay, CPA, CMPE

Joey Peay is Chief Executive Officer of Murfreesboro Medical Clinic, a position which he has held since 2003. Prior to 2003, he served as the Clinic's Chief Financial Officer for more than four years.

Joey graduated with honors from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. He passed the Uniform CPA Exam in 1988. He spent the first ten years of his career with KPMG, an international public accounting finn, leaving in 1998 as a Senior Manager.

Joey is a member of the Jones College of Business Dean's Advisory Council, the MTSU Accounting Advisory Board, the Endowment Committee of Special Kids, and the Murfreesboro Advisory Board for Alive Hospice. He is an Elder and Clerk of Session at Cripple Creek Presbyterian Church. Joey is also a graduate of the Leadership Rutherford Program, a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the Medical Group Management Association, and a Ce11ified Medical Practice Executive by the American College of Medical Practice Executives. Previously, Joey has served in leadership roles for the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Depaitment, American Heai1 Association, March of Dimes, and the Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross. In 2014, Joey was recognized by the Rutherford County Chainber of Commerce as its Businessperson of the Year.

Christopher Kuehl

Dr. Chris Kuehl is a Managing Director of Armada Corporate Intelligence. He provides forecasts and strategic guidance for a wide variety of corporate clients around the world. He is the chief economist for several national and international organizations, Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, National Association of Credit Management, Finance, Credit and International Business and the Business Information Industry Association. He is also the economic analyst for several state accounting societies – Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Kansas.

Prior to starting Armada in 1999 he was a professor of economics and finance for 15 years – teaching in the US, Hungary, Russia, Estonia, Singapore and Taiwan. He holds advanced degrees in economics, Soviet studies and East Asian studies.

Jarrod R. Barraza, CFA, ASA, ABV, CVA

Jarrod serves as a senior manager in HORNE's valuation and transaction advisory group, focusing on the healthcare industry. He is skilled in complex transactions and delivering tailored solutions to meet the needs of his clients such as hospitals, dentists, physician practices, pharmacies, and investor groups.

As an expert in healthcare valuation, Jarrod uses a data-driven approach, incorporating factors such as market trends, reimbursement rates and operational performance to ensure accuracy and reliability.

He also represents business owners, strategic corporate buyers and private equity investors to advise and manage the sale and purchase process for transacting parties. Jarrod brings his valuation background to the M&A process while advise clients on the financial aspects of a transaction.

Jarrod earned a Bachelor of Science in Music and Master of Science in Finance/Risk Management from the University of Colorado at Denver. He is a CFA charterholder, Accredited in Business Valuation, an Accredited Senior Appraiser (Business Valuation) and a Certified Valuation Analyst.

Ignacio Guevara is a partner in the tax group at Crowe. He specializes in tax consulting, compliance matters, and tax accounting. Ignacio has more than 14 years of experience providing services related to strategic federal, international, and state tax planning; indirect tax matters; transaction tax matters; and tax and research compliance.

Nicholas Ward, CPA

Nick is the Managing Director of Audit Services at RSM. He has been serving clients for over fourteen years in the health care and insurance industries. During this time, Nick has served a variety of clients focused primarily on serving hospitals, health systems, and health insurance companies. Some of his past clients have ranged in size from a health insurance company with over $4B in premiums and governmental program revenues and health care systems with over $3B in operating revenue. His experience includes planning, performing and supervising all phases of financial statement audits as well as the designing, documenting, evaluating and testing internal control processes and procedures in accordance with professional standards required for the audits of internal controls. Nick also has approximately two years of experience working for an international multibillion dollar insurance company serving in a financial reporting role.

In serving clients, Nick is responsible for all aspects of audits, including planning, execution and reporting. He works with the audit team to develop program strategies, define key audit areas, and assign staff to those areas as appropriate. He will manage audit fieldwork, review engagement workpapers, and prepare and review deliverable reports related to the audit. He spends a considerable amount of time understanding his clients and their business while working with their team. During the performance of the audit, he excels in the areas of task management and issue resolution, while providing the best in client service.

In addition to client service, Nick completed a 4 year rotation as the Health Care Audit Policy Leader in our firms National Professional Standards Group, overseeing the firms audit methodologies and training our audit teams use to serve all clients in the health care industry.

Will is a healthcare and long-term care expert with a decades-long track of record of launching and growing healthcare companies that solve intricate healthcare problems for seniors and populations with complex needs.

In 2013, Will founded AllyAlign Health, which has been rebranded as Curana Health, which focused on improving the quality of care within nursing homes. The company that transformed the quality of care for the frail and elderly who require long term care in an institutional setting, and owned and operated 22+ Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans focused on the elderly. AllyAlign deployed hundreds of clinicians supported by hundreds of plan personnel in the provision of care to thousands of enrollees with specials needs within over 500 nursing homes. In 2021, Will and AllyAlign exited to a multi-billion dollar, premier investment fund (NEA) in a nine figure transaction.

From 2007 to 2013, Will served in a progression of executive roles for Xerox Government Healthcare Services, culminating in serving as President - directly responsible for the vision, strategic direction, delivery, growth and customer satisfaction for a $1B annual revenue, 9,000 employee enterprise. Xerox Government Healthcare Services, the largest unit of Xerox at the time, contracted with 38 states to administer mission critical components of their Medicaid program and key tenets of the Affordable Care Act.

From 1999 to 2007, Will grew Heritage Information Systems. Heritage developed a ground breaking rules based utilization management solution that evaluated healthcare services at the point of care and a real time pharmacist-centric medication therapy management program. The tech/solution was adopted by over a dozen state Medicaid programs. The company also supported Medicaid states and commercial plans in combatting prescription drug fraud and abuse. Will was appointed President of the company after Heritage sold to a public company that eventually became Xerox.

Earlier in his career, Will was an executive in the physician practice management industry and worked for Price Waterhouse.

Nicole Trombley-Valdez, CPA

Nicole is a manager of Assurance Services at RSM. She has practiced public accounting for more than eight years. She provides assurance services to a variety of private entities across the health care industry. Her experience includes working with for-profit physician and dental practices and not-for-profit hospital systems.

In her current role, Nicole is responsible for leading assurance engagements. Her approach to client service focuses on being a first-choice advisor to clients in addition to meeting audit requirements.

Matt Wallace

Matt Wallace is the practice leader of LBMC's Health Care Consulting Services in Nashville. Matt has 20+ years of experience in healthcare and consulting leading high-performing teams of experienced healthcare revenue cycle members to solve complex client problems of large acute care medical centers, ambulatory multi-specialty medical groups, and surgery centers.

Over his career, Matt has led the project management office (PMO) for implementation and optimization support services of various EMR platforms and provided subject matter expertise on specific revenue cycle workflows. In addition, he has served in various interim roles with clients including the director of hospital billing and overseen multiple quality assurance audits.

David Bertani

David is a healthcare banking executive with more than two decades of leadership experience spanning commercial banking, healthcare finance and marketing, technology, and life sciences. Over the course of his career, he has built and led high-performing teams and developed deep expertise in business development, relationship management, and strategic execution within the healthcare sector.

Currently, David serves as Director of Commercial Healthcare Banking at Hancock Whitney, where he leads the bank's healthcare sponsor finance and large corporate initiative nationwide and manages a $750M portfolio. Previously, as Senior Vice President at Fifth Third Bank and CapStar Bank, he built portfolios from the ground up, secured dozens of new clients for his organizations that resulted in over $180M in new business.

Earlier in his career, David held leadership roles at Clariture Health, Hospital Corporation of America and Aegis Health Group, where he built sales and marketing functions, developed operational strategies, and was a member of these organizations' leadership teams. He also spent 17 years at Eli Lilly & Company, where he held multiple leadership roles in sales, marketing, and business development.

Enthusiastic about strengthening the healthcare ecosystem, David serves on for-profit and nonprofit boards, including Functional Pathways and Mary Queen of Angels Assisted Living Community, and previously was a board observer at Five Point Dental Specialists. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Visitors for the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama.

Randolph P. Johnston, MCS

Randy has been a top-rated speaker in the technology industry for over 40 years. Inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame in 2011, Randy is listed as a Top 25 Thought Leader in Accounting from 2011-2023. His influence throughout the accounting profession is highlighted once again this year by being a recipient of the 2022 Accounting Today Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting award for the eighteenth consecutive year. Among his many other awards, he holds the honor of being one of nine technology stars in the U.S. by Accounting Technology Magazine.

In addition, Randy writes a monthly column and produces a weekly podcast for The CPA Practice Advisor, features for the Journal of Accountancy, creates articles for accounting and technology publications, and is the author of numerous books. He has started and owns multiple businesses, including K2 Enterprises in Hammond, Louisiana, and Network Management Group, Inc. in Hutchinson, Kansas. NMGI has supported CPA firms for 30+ years and is the largest managed service provider serving the CPA profession in North America. His wife and four children enjoy many experiences together, including theatre, music, travel, golf, skiing, snorkeling, and model trains.
