Meet TSCPA Member: Terrice E. Watson, DBA, CPA, CIA, CRMA

October 29, 2025

For TSCPA member Terrice Watson, DBA, CPA, CIA, CRMA, a positive mindset is essential as a CPA. “As professionals, we are not just doing the work; we represent our entire profession every time we show up,” she says. In her role as assistant vice president for research administration and compliance at the University of Memphis, Watson works with a variety of faculty, staff, students and researchers, providing support for their projects. “Whether we are in the office, in the community, or speaking to students and future accountants, we are the face of what it means to be a CPA,” she says. “That is why it is so important to lead with integrity, enthusiasm and a spirit of encouragement.”

Early Years

A Memphis native, Watson has fond memories of growing up in the city’s Orange Mound community. “Back then, it felt like a world of its own,” she reflects. “Neighbors looked out for each other like extended family. Even though I kept to myself, I never felt alone. The community had a way of embracing everyone, even the quiet ones. Looking back, those early years shaped a lot of who I am today – grounded, observant, and deeply appreciative of connection and culture.”

Meaningful Mentorship

Over her career, Watson says she has had several key influencers and mentors, each one shaping her in different but meaningful ways. “One of my earliest mentors was a high school teacher who saw potential in me before I fully saw it in myself,” she recalls. “She encouraged my love for learning and gave me the confidence to pursue higher education, even when I was not sure what path to take.”

A Love of Learning

Watson ultimately decided to major in accounting due to her love of numbers and talent in math. “Numbers made sense to me; they were clear, consistent, and problem solving came naturally,” she says. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Christian Brothers University, Watson also went on to complete two master’s degrees. Most recently, she earned a Doctor of Business Administration from Trevecca Nazarene University.

A Challenging Season

On the road to earning her CPA license, Watson’s journey took an unexpected turn. “After passing one part of the CPA Exam, I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she says. Despite her diagnosis, Watson was determined to achieve her goal, studying as she went through surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. “Just two months after completing my final round of chemo, I passed the last part of the CPA Exam,” she says. “It was one of the most challenging seasons of my life physically, mentally and emotionally. But by the grace of God, I pressed through, and today, I am proud to say that I am a certified public accountant.”

Working To Make an Impact

In her current position as assistant vice president for research administration and compliance at the University of Memphis, Watson is responsible for pre-award, research contracts and post-award management. She says her role is to ensure that projects are not only well supported but also meet ethical, legal and regulatory standards. “Every day is different, which keeps the role dynamic and engaging,” she says. “I have the opportunity to support faculty, staff, students and researchers as they pursue innovative and meaningful work that can have real-world impact.”

Advice for Future CPAs

For students considering an accounting career, Watson encourages them to pursue the path and persevere through challenges. “A career in accounting opens doors, builds confidence and gives you a solid foundation for your future,” she says. “The career requires commitment, especially when it gets hard. When you are unsure or facing obstacles, know that many others have walked that path before you and come out stronger on the other side. I certainly did.”
